Beginners 1 Day Navigation Course
This course is for beginners to navigation or those who want to recap on the basics and build some confidence finding routes around the hills of Ireland using a map and compass.
This course will be run from 09:00am until around 03.30pm. It will take place entirely outdoors on tracks, trails, and the open mountainside so good footwear and waterproofs are recommended. The aim of the course is not to overwhelm you with lots of information but to get you confident finding your way on lowland tracks, trails, and from point to point in open terrain in lower level Irish hills.
This course is designed as an introduction or refresher to essential skills for navigating in the Irish hills during daylight hours.
The course will consist of some theory and lots practical application, building confidence and experience. Including; Locating yourself on the map, map setting and interpreting the landscape around you.
We will discuss different map types and technology and practice map setting and some simple navigation techniques..
You will need a a reasonably level of fitness with some for 6+ hours on the hills.
Please bring a packed lunch.

- Orientating the map using compass & features
- Intro to navigate - Direction, Distance, Destination, Duration & Description
- Mountain features & terminology
We aim to equip you with the basic knowledge and start you in becoming self-sufficient in the mountains. This course would be a great option before committing to the Mountain Skills course.
