Basic Navigation Course - 19 Sept
This course is for beginners to navigation or those who want to recap on the basics and build some confidence finding routes around the hills of Ireland using a map and compass.
This course will be run from 9:00am until around 3.30pm. It will take place entirely outdoors on tracks, trails, boardwalk and some open mountainside so good footwear and waterproofs are recommended. The aim of the course is not to overwhelm you with lots of information but to get you confident finding your way on lowland tracks, trails, and from point to point in open terrain in lower level Irish hills.
Topics covered on the course;
- Types of maps & scale
- Compasses & its parts
- Map Legend & identifying symbols
- Orientating the map using compass & features
- Intro to navigate - Direction, Distance, Destination, Duration & Description
- Mountain features & terminology
- In an Emergency
We aim to equip you with the basic knowledge and start you in becoming self-sufficient in the mountains. This course would be a great option before committing to the Mountain Skills course.
